Overcoming The Fear Of Going Deeper In Meditation
Welcome to Day 10 of our journey into Christian meditation! Today, we confront a common challenge: the fear of going deeper in meditation. Many believers hesitate to fully immerse themselves in the practice, fearing the unknown realms of intimacy with God. Let’s explore how to overcome these fears and embrace the transformative power of meditation.
Three reasons for fear and how to overcome them.
Fear of the Unknown
Many people fear what they don’t understand, especially when it comes to spiritual realms. However, the Bible reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7 that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.
Unlearn Fear: Fear is often learned from authority figures, society, or experiences. Just as a child learns fear by observing caregivers, we can unlearn it by growing in knowledge and trusting God’s Word.
Trust in God’s Protection: If we can sleep without fearing we won’t wake up, we can meditate without fearing we won’t “come back.” Meditation, rooted in Scripture, is safe because we are under God’s protection.
Fear of Intimacy
Some people fear being alone with their thoughts, let alone with God. This fear often stems from discomfort with themselves.
Learn to Enjoy Your Company: Start by spending quiet moments with yourself, free of distractions. Embrace your thoughts and feelings, knowing God loves you as you are.
Draw Near to God: James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” As you practice intimacy with yourself, you’ll find it easier to be intimate with God in meditation.
Fear of Vulnerability
Vulnerability can feel like exposure, and many resist it, even in God’s presence. However, vulnerability is key to deeper spiritual encounters.
Embrace Transparency: David’s Psalms are filled with raw honesty before God, from joy to frustration. Follow his example by being open in your meditations.
Practice Letting Go: To overcome self-consciousness, create safe spaces for vulnerability, like meditating in private or practicing stillness without distractions.
Practical tips for overcoming fear in meditation:
Choose Scripture: Meditate on verses that affirm God’s love and protection, such as Psalm 23:4 or Isaiah 41:10.
Focus on the Present: Let go of fears about what might happen and focus on being present with God.
Take Small Steps: Gradually extend your meditation time, exploring deeper intimacy with each session.
Trust the Holy Spirit: Allow the Spirit to guide you, knowing that He is your Comforter and Counselor.
